This post is really more like the second half of my walk through Währing, Vienna’s 18th district. In the spring of 2015 I paid a visit to Kutschkermarkt, Währing’s farmer’s market, with a little wandering about for good measure. Little did I know at the time that Währing would become our new home!
A couple of weeks ago, inspired by an article I had read about Vienna’s “Best Knacker” at Fleischerei Bauer near our house, Anna Grace and I decided to combine a Gemeindebau walk with a “Best Knacker” lunch.
“Good Boy!”
Well hidden behind this tree was this mosaic, The Liberation of Austria 1945.
Währing lacked Kunst am Bau quantity, but made up for that with quality. We almost did not find this one, a beautiful glass-tiled obelisk depicting People and Animals.
Two unexpected mosaics. The first, outside of an elementary school; the second, one associated with a private residence.
By now the hot sun was taking its toll on us, and all we could think of was lunch. We caught the tram to the Gersthof Bahnhof, home to a regional train connection and a small collection of Imbiss, Backerei, Cafes, and Fleischerei Bauer.
Except. Foiled by Vienna in summer. The butcher was on holiday. Some other time, perhaps.
