An alcoholic drink before midday, typically Sunday, at a heuriger, in the company of friends.
For two weekends in September the Wiener Alpen region opens its vineyards to hikers and wanderers in grand style with the Genussmeile, billed as the longest tavern in the world and stretching about 16 kilometers through said vines. Eighty vintners open huts and stands along the way, offering wine and traditional foods to pair with the hiking. With friends visiting this week who have been there, done that with the usual Vienna activities, what could be a more perfect Sunday activity?
But first, Frühschoppen. A round of Gespritzer (white wine and sparkling water) to get our hike off to a good start.
Seven kilometers were tallied, along with several glasses of Sturm (the new wine) and local varietals. And the all important Brettljause to keep everyone’s tummies happy.
Wouldn’t be vineyard hiking without the vines.
Until next time…
