Sunday’s outing was a rescheduled Mother’s Day activity. Anna Grace was brain-deep in final exam preparations in May, and because the entire day should be devoted to the activity we simply moved the holiday along to a more convenient weekend.
One rather appreciated trait of the Viennese is that if they are awake in the early morning they are not driving around the city, so we could zip down to catch the 0820 train to Melk with nary any traffic. Equally as appreciated was that we had the entire bike carriage of the train to ourselves; on our previous ride the carriage was a sea of cycles that took some time to detangle.
From Melk to Krems the ride is about 40km, mostly flat and downhill; past protected world heritage scenery, vineyards, castle ruins, Instagrammable villages, and of course, the Marillen trees the area is noted for.
Just as the Wachau Valley was a feast for our eyes, our favorite heuriger was offering grilled ribs as a weekend specialty–a feast for our tummies!
We had gifted Tony a charcoal grill-ready pizza stone for Father’s Day, which he happily fired up upon our return. Three crispy pizzas, a cold Pinot Grigio and some FIFA2018 (“When in Rome,” right?) later, our spectacular day wound to a close.
