In 1983 the brand-new and local-to-Knoxville Calhoun’s competed in the National Rib Cook-Off in Cleveland, Ohio, and brought home the Blue Ribbon for “Best Ribs in America.”

I think it’s the Calhoun sauce. Or perhaps the from-scratch sides. Or maybe it’s the Southern hospitality. Probably the entire combination.
Their fried pickles are not my favorite, however. Too big, and not crispy enough. Right now the fried pickles from Myrtle’s Chicken & Beer take the top honor. (There will be Chicken Commentary eventually…)
Calhoun’s Wings are also amazing. We tend to over-order because by the time we have decided to order barbeque we are borderline hangry, so there’s always leftovers. That ain’t such a bad thing.
