Schloss Hernstein is a Theophil von Hansen creation; in fact, it is the design that inspired his more well-known constructions in Vienna, Parliament and the Wiener Musikverein (where Anna Grace has performed), one of the most acoustically perfect halls in the world. Another near acoustically-perfect hall is Hill Auditorium on The University of Michigan campus, at which the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (and Jack) have performed. The castle also served as a Hapsburg hunting lodge; and from 1945-1955 was home to the Russian Commander-in-Chief.

Saturday’s grape harvesting was all work. Sunday’s wandering along the Genussmeile was all play.

31C in the valley. 21C, 2075m atop Lower Austria’s highest mountain. Guess where we opted to be on an otherwise hot and smarmy Sunday?
(In the event you are curious, the mountain grass does have a faintly sweet aroma.)

The heatwave affecting Europe has more than worn out its welcome, at least for us. On one particularly miserable day last week the forecast 39°C found us seeking refuge in our local mountains, 1715m above Austria and where the daytime high reached just 22°C.

A “gorge”ous outing a couple of weekends ago, into the Vienna Woods. The temperatures were unseasonably warm (30°C) in Vienna so we escaped to wander one of the nearby cool and shady gorges, Johannisbachklamm.
